In 1985, Dr. Gordon Klatt, an American colorectal surgeon decided he wanted to raise money for the HYPERLINK (“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Cancer_Society” American Cancer Society ) in honor of his cancer patients. This first successful event raised $27,000, after which similar 24-hour events in other communities were held. People of all ages come out to bring their community together to reminisce their loved ones who have died of cancer and honor those who have survived while raising money to fight for a cure. Now, Relay events are being held in over 5,000 communities in the US and 22 countries including Japan.
In Japan, half of the population will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. Of those, one in three Japanese lose their lives to cancer. Given this stark reality, further cancer awareness must be raised in Japan not only for compassion and support for cancer survivors and their caregivers , but to encourage cancer prevention and new drug developments.
We currently strive to move from an uninformed Japanese community to an inclusive society for a brighter and stronger future. One way to achieve this goal is by hosting “Relay For Life”. With the efforts and will of 30 executive committee members who have initiated this movement, we are confident that we will overcome our current situation to overcome cancer. Last year a similar event was held in Ueno Park and we had more than 10,000 participants raising more than 20,000,000 in the process.
We are writing to invite you to join us in fighting cancer by lending your help and participation.

Event Outline

Relay For Life’s three goals

CELEBRATE
To overcome those doctor’s words “You have cancer” and to celebrate cancer survivorship.
To provide an opportunity for survivors in the community to come together and share their experiences with cancer.
To provide an opportunity for participants to reach out and connect with survivors giving them courage that they can overcome cancer.
REMEMBER
To gather and remember those who have fallen victim to cancer.
To offer a chance to honor a loved one who has passed away or is currently fighting the disease.
Candle lighting ceremony to the remembrance of loved ones.
FIGHT BACK
To raise funds for cancer prevention, awareness, research and care services. RFL has raised over 4 billion US dollars.
